Can I use a VGA splitter cable to run 2 monitors on 1 pc?

I want to be able to use 2 external monitors with my laptop using a splitter cable connected to the VGA output from the bottom of my laptop. Will it work? I guess I'll just be able to use a kind of virtual desktop that make seem that both monitors are just one big monitor?

If you want both monitors to display the same image, then you could probably split the cable, but you have to disconnect the output from 2 monitors to the PC. If you want to have a virtual desktop and then double-head graphics card is your best choice, but I imagine that getting a laptop that offers this would be a bear.
