If you already have cable TV service and HD-DVR, DVD recorder with digital tuner will not be as useful. However, there are still some things you can do with a DVD recorder with digital tuner .. Let me explain. For the record, you want a DVD recorder with QAM tuner, in addition to the ATSC. The QAM will be able to tune digital channels that your cable company does not code (ie, in the course). If you have a HD-DVR from the cable company, which does not allow you to record VOD (Video On Demand) shows / movies to the DVR. So if you want to record some programs to play on another TV, you are lucky … Well, not so if you also has a DVD burner. Here's something not everybody knows. Most cable companies move unencrypted VOD. Thus, any device with a tuner Will be able to tune QAM VOD programs. It is clear enough to be able to see what your neighbors are watching, but you are at your disposal in terms of the FF / REW. Say you want to record some episodes of SpongeBob from the channel "free OnDemand". What you can do is ask on the DVR. Tune to that channel on the DVD recorder (which could take a little searching). Then, the input of the DVR and DVD recorder and record. Now, is this "feature" worth the extra money to strengthen digital tuner model? It depends on you, I guess.
