Inkjet Printers
Although several methods for obtaining the ink on the paper, often designed or selected by a particular manufacturer, for most purposes the principle is the same. The ink is stored in small tanks. These are four separate tanks, or patterns, one for each color, or a tank and Black half tank the three colors cyan, magenta and yellow. The latter method can be expensive in use, such as the Magenta from the other colors, you still need to replace of all three. The Black tank is usually larger than the others, as the more commonly used for text printing.
Replacement of these tanks on a regular basis is the cause of the current high cost of inkjet printers. This has led to other manufacturers to sell "compatible" cartridges and refills. Naturally, the printer manufacturers hate this and threatens serious consequences, such as poor color, and damage to the printer, the warranty invalid etc. However, judging by the plethora of companies selling these compatibles, the customers seem to be satisfied! One manufacturer even includes a device to tell you the cartridge is replaced by a "foreign" brand, and prevents printing (at to protect your investment).
The other important part that needs replacing after some use (or abuse with false papers), the print head. These can be very expensive to replace, comparable to the cost of a new printer.
Inkjet printers can be used in specialized versions, such as photo printers and large format or A3 printers.
Photo Printers often have additional color ink for a more accurate representation of, for example, skin tones give the inkjets are preferred printer preview. They do not fit duplex, but this can be treated
Large format printer can also be used as photo printers, they are typically used to graphs, diagrams and flow charts, including those used to print print them on canvas.
Laserprinters
Initially expensive, and notorious for getting toner everywhere, especially in that white shirt or dress (tip wash in cold water, hot water fuses the toner to the material), laser printers have always been selected for their ability text at high quality. The early models requires regular replacement of OPC cartridge and toner cartridge. Other items such as corona wires were also replaced at different periodically to keep the quality high. These days these items are all in one unit replaced in most models, and you can wear your white shirt again. The print quality is excellent, and permanent, being fused to the paper. Two sided printing is incorporated in many models, in the first overcome teething problems with complicated paper feed paths.
Color lasers are available, too, and at prices affordable by the home user. Of course the four sets of toner, etc. are needed for four color printing, but produced image can just as well on poor quality paper. The resolution is not suitable for quality printing of photographs as the inkjet printer, but printing large blocks of color, such as a graphics card, or an advertising box-shot "they are perfect. Especially in the large format, typically A3 printers, also available.
Maintenance is especially high runs much better than the inkjet models. Again, toner cartridges are available from "compatible" manufacturers. Some of these simply refill your old cartridge, which cause problems, as they are designed for single use. A poorly refilled toner cartridge can cause problems to appear be caused by other components. Make sure you have a good warranty with it!
In Part 3 we look at other types of printer for the SOHO user.
