For centuries, navigators had most of their time and effort devoted to the elaboration of their position. Now, a very high degree may be relied on GPS to ensure that. The Problem is that even with rapid plotting techniques, human navigator working on a paper map can not hope to keep the flow of information from GPS receivers.
A solution In chartplotters use the current position is displayed on an electronic map. The software link between the two, converting the electronic cartography in a form that can be displayed on the screen, allowing us to perform navigation tasks, and communicate with other electronic devices such as a GPS receiver and autopilot.
Dedicated hardware v pc
In general, most dedicated hardware plotters Marine Electronics produced by specialized companies, and come with their own software already installed.
Dedicated hardware is good because it is rough and waterproof (at least to some extent) and is designed to operate from an unreliable 12-volt supply. The control panel and operating procedures are likely to be specially designed for use as a chart plotter, and although the choice of cartography is limited – usually to a particular supplier and a particular type cartridge – the coverage is generally good and the cartridges are readily available.
PC-plotters plotting existence of specialized software that can be loaded in nearly every personal computer, but laptops are the most popular for the job.
PC-plotters are good, because the initial investment amount is relatively low (especially if you though a suitable computer) and because the computer itself is much more versatile than a dedicated plotter. Some PC software to use cartography from a variety of different suppliers, but additional or updated maps are not always readily available.
Raster graphics cards vector v
Although there are many different vendors electronic cards, the cards themselves can be divided into two main groups: raster and vector.
Raster maps can be regarded as electronic photocopies paper maps produced by scanning a master copy of a paper map, in much the same way as a fax a document that is about to be sent scans. The map is divided into many small dots (pixels), and the position and color of each pixel is recorded. Instead of sending that information into a phone line, as does a fax, scanner saves the graph on the computer of the cartographer's, where it can be copied to floppy disks or CD-ROMs, and delivered to customers.
Grid cards are relatively inexpensive and easy to make, but each graph consumes much memory or disk space. Because they are electronically copied directly from the paper chart, they are known in appearance, and contain the same information: nothing is added or removed. The disadvantage of this is that they can only effectively be used at about the same size as the original graph: if you zoom in, then letters and symbols are great, but no additional details are visible, but when you zoom out, names and symbols illegible.
Vector cards are produced by electronically tracing raster maps. The fundamental difference is that the lines are not stored as strings of darkened pixels, but as lines. Vector Maps originally popular for the small boat hardware plotters because although they are expensive to produce, they occupy much less memory. The vector format offers more flexibility in how the card is used: a vector-graph can be zoomed in or out much further than a grid graph, but the letters and symbols always stay the same size.
