It seems only yesterday that HP introduced its first large-scale poster plotter to the IT world – but in fact the year 1997.
The DesignJet 2500 was the first in a long line of HP plotters, who print high quality documents on a large scale possible. The technical issue of food large sheets of paper and storing and delivering the required high volume ink was finally overcome. Since 1997, the products are becoming more sophisticated, dealing with both improved quality and print speed that the modern user requirements.
The DesignJet 2500 was followed by the Designjet 3500 whose unique feature was that it was able to print on paper width of 54 inches using the method of inkjet printing and since then the quality and performance of the HP DesignJet range is further enhanced and improved.
One of the biggest problems for users of these machines is the Total Cost of Ownership of these high initial investment business tools. The initial cost is of course the big investment, but the running costs of keeping these machines run in terms of maintenance and ink can also be large.
For this reason many organizations often contract with a provider of specialized plotters to look after their mission critical "super-printers" – and contracts often specify response times and fixed so that users can be assured that their plotter not be too long in the day. The cost of these contracts can be very modest in comparison to paying off the cost of these same companies when they are invited to participate to take an ad hoc basis.
When working on an ad hoc non-contracted is usually not a guaranteed response time, guaranteed to set time, or a replacement plotter awaiting repair. For most organizations, a maintenance contract are an essential part of their business continuity program.
