Electronics greatest technological breakthrough in this modern age is the digitization of analog signals. Digital information, represented by 1s and 0s, is formed on the successful conversion of analog information, which is represented by a fluctuating wave. This conversion from analog to digital has made the world of science and technology making great progress in the field of computers, Internet, satellites, and space research.
On the site, the consumer benefits of this technological breakthrough reflected in consumer products like televisions, computers, cameras, camcorders, CDs, DVDs, etc. Digitalisation has led to micro chips, which could be programmed for each task. With the use of the microchip, the digital camera was born.
In a digital camera, the lens focuses the image, the shutter, the entry of light because of that image in the camera, for a fraction of one seconds and the aperture determines the amount of light allowed into the camera. The image sensor is an electronic device, a semiconductor, which comprises photosites that measures the light intensity. The photosite can only measure the intensity of the light and can not recognize any color. Because the human eye is sensitive to the double green, the number of photo sites with green color is twice the number of photo sites with red or blue color. Millions of photosites covered this Bayer pattern. Each color has a single photo site, known stands as one pixel.
The more the number of pixels, the greater the amount of detail that can be caught. The detail of the image is called a resolution, which is determined by the quality of the lens and the number of pixels in the image sensor. High-end digital cameras have about 12 million pixels, while the professional digital cameras have approximately 20 million pixels.
The information of the pixels is recorded as analog electrical signals, is increased, and then fed into a converter, which converts analog signals into digital enhanced binary numbers on the color information of each pixel. These digital binary numbers are then entered into a computer chip present in the camera. The computer chip analyzes the digital binary numbers according to the color of individual pixels made. This information is known as RAW data. For analysis, the computer chip subjects this RAW data using a technique known as demosaicing.
In this technique (demosaicing), the per pixel color is the color of the adjacent pixels determined. For example, if a red color pixel is surrounded by blue and green pixels, then that red color pixel is treated as white as the color White is a combination of colors, red, blue and green. After demosaicing is complete, the image is further subject to the photographer `s settings of the camera, including adjustments made for brightness, color saturation, contrast, etc.
High-end digital cameras usually do nothing to the image is produced. However, professional digital cameras have a sharpening algorithm, the sharpness and clarity of the increase demosaiced and settings adjusted image. Professional digital cameras also have the option of Save the image in the RAW data before demosaicing or adjustments are made by the computer chip. Depending on need, the image can be stored either in an uncompressed or compressed format, as bits and bytes in a memory. The stored image can be viewed on the digital camera `s display as a digital photo.
This digital photo can then be transferred from the digital camera to the computer `s hard drive via the serial port or USB port or FireWire port or Bluetooth wireless connectivity via Wi-Fi. Uncompressed TIFF and RAW data as data take longer to transfer than compressed data like JPEG or POISON.
Once the data is transmitted to the computer `s hard disk, a photo editing software can manipulate and modify, as in the individual tastes and requirements of the photographer. The digital photo can then be printed on photographic paper, specially coated paper, or other paper with a color inkjet or laser printer. Using a plotter, it may be printed in larger sizes, in another medium, such as linen, acrylic, vinyl, etc. The digital photo can be stored on a hard disk, pen drive or a CD, for archival purposes.
With passing time, more and more functions are implemented in a digital camera. Nowadays, audio-video recording is also combined with capturing the still image capabilities of the digital camera, making them small camcorders (camera + recorder).
