Graphic Organizer Instructions
Graphic organizers are a great teaching tool for regular use! Many teachers are great about the use of KWL charts, but these are not the only graphic organizers out there. Visual and mathematical-logical students significantly benefit from this form of learning. If the graphic organizers leveled for different groups or used in cooperative learning groups, the results are great!
Many teachers have used Venn diagrams, which are great for student understanding and application of the material. Venn diagrams are certainly a higher level thinking type of graphic organizer. Venn seem simple enough when we look at them, but throw a couple on a first or second graders and watch the look of confusion you start to see. These organizers can (and should) be leveled for different learners. I also suggest that teachers always used Venn let students work in partners or small groups. Everything will certainly more than just trying to complete. Vary the type of Venn diagram used by giving a lower level groups simple two-pie chart to compare and contrast two things. An on-level group could do the same, but are asked to use the information from the graph to a paragraph make adjustments to the information found. A higher level partner group may be a three-circle version or demanded for one argument to defend a point-of-view to create using the information on their Venn. Leveling does wonders for the use of Venn diagrams as a pedagogical tool.
Another type of graph is a T-card. T-cards favorable when you compare or contrast, in much the same way as a Venn diagram does. In the case of a T-chart, there is no middle group. T-cards can be used wonderfully attribute groups in mathematics or science for the classification of organisms. The list-makers in your class will love completing these organizer.
Mind-mapping is another graphic organizer that can be used not so much as the previous two. When you ask students to mind-map, all you’re really asking them to do is create a kind of symbolic reminder of what was learned so that the connection is available for later. In order to properly use mind-mapping is continuously modeled students to gain a firm grasp of what is expected. In this strategy, you start with a circle in the middle of an ordinary sheet of paper with the key concept included in the center of the circle. They will then add the students ’spokes’ to the circle to add subcategories. The spokes have to use images, words, and certainly very colorful. Colored pencils are used to enhance retention. I want my students to add to their card each day after today’s lesson. In this way, the final card used as an evaluation tool for the last chapter test. Mind maps help students to realize they actually plotting main ideas and supporting details of a topic. This skill can be transferred to a subject taught.
Graphic organizers are abundant and a source book or the internet can show much more than I could ever cover. The organizers are essential for understanding and transfer of knowledge base for all levels of students.
